A plant enthusiast revealed why spraying milk on indoor houseplants can leave them “shiny” longer.

Brad Canning, from Melbourne, shared a TikTok video showing how his houseplants have perfectly shiny leaves by polishing them with skimmed milk and water.

The milk mixture acts as a natural leaf shiner and contains nutrients like calcium and proteins that can help the plant grow.

“Did you know that milk can really help your houseplants? I know it sounds a little crazy, but the reason we use milk is because the protein in milk helps break down the residue on the leaves to give it that shine we all love, ”Brad said.

To make the DIY solution at home, you will need to combine 3/4 cup of water with 1/2 cup of milk in an empty spray bottle.

“Give it a little mix and it’s ready for your plants,” the graphic designer said.

“You just want to spray on the leaves and wipe them off well. Then take a dry cloth and wipe off all the residue.

Brad said he preferred to use skim milk because it mixes better with water.

“Another good thing about diluted milk is that it doesn’t smell so it doesn’t smell or attract any bugs, so it’s perfect,” he said.

He said it’s important to wipe the leaves every now and then to keep them dust free, as the build-up can prevent the plant from absorbing sunlight.

“The dust on the leaves therefore prevents plants from getting what they need from the sun,” he explained.

His video has since been viewed over 25,000 times, with many saying they never knew you could use milk as a leaf shine.

“Wow, I just tried it and it totally works. Thanks for sharing, “one wrote, while another added:” Wow, I never knew. “

Others asked if they could use any type of milk, to which Brad replied, “Unfortunately cannot be plant-based, skim mixes better with milk”.

Milks like almond and cashew don’t have active cultures that contain the brilliant benefits like dairy alternatives, so it won’t work on plants.

While some have said they have been cleaning their houseplants with milk for years, one woman said, “My grandma taught me this trick years ago.”
