Enthusiast’s Guide to the Perfect Scooter

Yamaha fans and motorcycle enthusiasts can agree with me that since the death of its four (two) stroke engines, the brand’s lineup (in India) hasn’t been so exciting for a very long time. long time. But then the r15 came like a ray of light in the dark and we saw hope. Through its generation(s), we have seen commendable improvements that have only made us more fond of the bike. Now the heart of this bike has been placed in there. A scooter, called the Aerox 155. A new product and a new story. So enough with the intro because we have a lot to say about this one.

Now Yamaha has done a magnificent job of matching the scooters exterior design with what it cares about. The scooter looks fast and aggressive with sharp edges throughout. Plus, with its striking paint schemes, there’s a lot going on, but nothing that feels out of place.

With its LED headlights, step-by-step format and 14-inch wheels, it’s clear that Speed is its thing.

Manufacturing quality

Now, all of this might inspire you to take a closer look and that’s when you’ll notice some cost-cutting maneuvers on the scooter. For a scooter that is positioned in a high-end segment, the Aerox had a rather fragile apparatus. Also, in addition to a few panel gaps here and there, the scooter also gets flimsy plastic in places like the fuel filler cap.

Creature practicality and comfort

Now Yamaha has given away some clever places to store your stuff, like the little stash hole up front. However, this won’t fit large modern phones and is best suited for keys or wallets. The lack of a floor is due to the position of the fuel tank, which also resulted in a larger boot volume of 24.5 litres.

The Aerox also comes with a connectivity feature, but with limited functionality. There’s no GPS navigation or music controls. What you get are text and call alerts, and a feature to check your last parking location.

The Aerox is a scooter, but as you can see, no running board. what you get are two grooves to put your foot in. The space is enough, you can move your foot around, and it doesn’t feel cramped at all. As for the riding position, the seat is a bit high for a scooter, but the seat is wide and there is plenty of room to move around. You get a fairly upright riding position that won’t break your back.

However, taller runners who are over 5’10 will have problems adjusting to their knee. And given that stepping into the seat comes quite early, backing up further might not be an option either.

Performance and ride quality

The Aerox 155 gets the same engine as the R15 with a few fewer ponies. But that doesn’t stop it from being India’s fastest scooter. The power delivery is linear and non-intimidating. It carries its momentum quickly and consistently, up to triple-digit speeds. The 15bhp on tap that’s commendable at least by scooter standards, the Aerox is quick and delivers smooth overtaking in city traffic, while still being capable of 90-100mph highway cruising. We managed to reach a top speed of 117 km/h, which was commendable.

Now, it’s a sports scooter so we have to talk about handling. The Aerox is an incredible high-speed handler. Now, unlike other scooters on the market, the Aerox feels a little heavy in the turns and takes a bit of effort to tip it over. This is also due to the stiff suspension and the 14-inch wheel wrapped in fat tires. Barter, however, is an unwavering stability that accompanies every turn. The scooter feels planted on a rail while cornering, which instills more confidence in the rider.

Now, unfortunately, there are no accessories to improve braking performance on the Aerox. The 230mm disc brake up front, while adequate for its duties even at high speeds, lacks feel at the lever. Also, the rear drum brakes are where we thought Yamaha should improve as the setup seemed quite weak.

Now, in the eyes of a performance-oriented petrolhead, the Aerox 155 is a damn good scooter. the Aerox is quite capable of carving out a place for itself at the end of the day, it’s still a scooter and the word scooter comes with myriad expectations in India. In my eyes, the Aerox is actually a good second two-wheeler for my garage. Short weekend trips and the occasional fun ride, yes. Chores, errands and long daily trips around town, not so much.
