According to Kwasi Kwaning Bosompem, the controller, all public sector workers are required to obtain their Ghana card to harmonize the database to facilitate biometric and unique identification of all workers on the government payroll.

In a note to all public sector workers, Bosompem said the move was part of the Government of Ghana’s efforts to provide fast, secure and verified payroll service to government employees and retirees while reducing the risk of payment or undeserving claims.

“Through this notice, all current and potential officials must ensure that they are registered with the NIA and have obtained their identification number.”

But the teachers’ union disagreed and said: “We wish to state that the said public notice is not only unfortunate, but absurd, blatant and intimidating and that Ghanaian workers would not endure such instinctive approaches to resolve the issue. someone else’s laissez-faire attitude towards resolving perceived gaps and shortcomings in the [payroll] system.”

In a statement, GNAT said: “We would like to stress that it is the responsibility of the NIA to ensure that all workers obtain the NIA cards, therefore the NIA should liaise with the CAGD, employers and workers themselves. even for the cards to be issued to them. (the workers) and save them (the workers) from being taken hostage, by the CAGD. We are not happy that workers are being held to ransom and harassment, due to operational failures of the NIA and CAGD. ”

The GNAT urged the CAGD instead to “help facilitate the process and stop intimidating and harassing workers”.
